THE KEEPER AND WHAT YOU COLLECT

"Scott goes Bananas in the Old Grey Lady."  That was the subject line of an email I received from Harley Spiller, Franklin Furnace Deputy Director (and world renowned Inspector Collector). The reference was to an article in the New York Times entitled  What You Collect: The Ordinary and the Odd, which in turn referenced the expansive summer exhibition at the New Museum entitled The Keeper.  I had responded to a NYT survey about personal collections with a short description of "BANANACO", my mail art project from the 70s and 80s which ended up being quoted in the article.

GOING BANANAS IN NEW YORK

New York Art Book Fair installation in the window between the ARTBOOK @ MoMA PS1 Bookstore and M. Wells Dinette (on the ground floor of the museum).

I was asked by Skúta Helgason to create a window installation for Artbook @ MoMA PS1 in conjunction with the 2016 New York Art Book Fair. There is a lot of art world interest in the 60s/70s/80s of late (could be nostalgia or discovery, depending on how old you are): A terrific show at the NYU Grey Art Gallery about Charlotte Moorman and the New York Avant-Garde Festivals she produced; Martha Wilson's keynote speech at the 2016 NYABF conference; a slew of The Guerrilla Girls international exhibitions; the publication of Douglas Crimp's "Before Pictures" are a few examples.

In that vein,  “Going Bananas in New York” was drawn from an extensive collection of bananabilia accumulated by the correspondence art entity BANANACO. The objects, images and clippings on display were exchanged for mailings from “The Professor,” the mail art persona (and my alter ego) who emerged in the 1970s. Initially a means to communicate with my friends who lived away, the project grew to include newly minted friends of The Professor’s from the correspondence art network. BANANACO NEWS (2008), a collection of The Professor’s broadside published from 1977 to 1982 and Bananaco Pecha Kucha (2013), an illustrated guide of 20 things regarding BANANACO were also featured.

"I WENT BANANAS IN NEW YORK"
Time-limited print edition in conjunction with the 2016 NYABF

I'm pleased to be the inaugural artist to participate in the Artbook time-limited print program with this image which blended nicely with the concurrent installation at the Fair. The concept of the program is unique: Prints are available in a variety of sizes and printed with archival inks on photo rag paper. They are available from the beginning of the 2016 New York Art Book Fair through the eve of the 2017 New York Art Book Fair. The prints are numbered in sequence, but only limited by time. Any interest can be directed to Amanda Paixão, Book Buyer & Bookstore Manager apaixao@artbook.com.
