Summer News

96F degrees and counting . . .

Things are cooking besides eggs on the sidewalk. An embarrassment of opportunity has made the heat more bearable.

I've been named a 2011 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts. A complete list of Fellows, Finalists & panelists can be found on the NYFA website

Summer Teaching

THE DISEMBODIED BOOK MADE WHOLE (AGAIN)
Visual Studies Workshop Summer Institute
July 25-29
This is an iteration of the workshop I taught at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University of NL last summer. I'm hoping the heat breaks so everyone will feel like working (myself included).

Summer Exhibitions
I'm represented in two (!) exhibitions at the Center for Book Arts in New York:
Organized by Alexander Campos, Executive Director, and Doug Beube runs from July 6 – September 10, 2011
AND
runs from July 6, 2011 - September 10, 2011.
The CBA collection is accessible online. Yellow Hanging Accordion Book Structure, which is in the show, can be seen there. Deirdre Lawrence, Principal Librarian at the Brooklyn Museum of Art wrote a flattering entry for my piece for the catalogue.

FALL PREVIEW

------------------------------------------------------------------

September 29-October 2
I'll be participating in the sixth annual NY Art Book Fair, from September 30 to October 2, 2011, at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens. A preview will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 29th. It's all free and open to the public. I took last year off and experienced the Fair from the other side of the table (the only time I'd been mobile since it started in 2006). It's easy to spend the whole three days (and many more dollars) looking at artists books and independent publications from around the globe.

November 1 – December 15, 2011
I'm working on an exhibition of my bookwork for Light Work in Syracuse. The show is in conjunction with the "Photography + Publishing Photography Conference" (November 3-5), a joint effort of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of SPE (Society of Photographic Education). There will be an opening reception November 3, 5-7pm as a pre-conference event located in the Robert B. Menschel Media Center, 316 Waverly Avenue in Syracuse.

Mid-November

Scott McCarney: Books & Pieces (working title)
2nd Floor, Wallace Learning Center, RIT

Kari Horowicz is curating an exhibition of my work drawn from The Cary Graphic Arts Collection at RIT. Since I never throw anything away, I'll be lending bits and pieces in support of the finished works on display (metal dies, maquettes, original art and false starts).

Keep cool!
